Coronary Calcium Score

What is a Coronary Calcium Score?

A Coronary Calcium Score is a diagnostic test that uses computed
tomography (CT) to measure the amount of calcium in the walls of the
coronary arteries. The presence of calcium indicates atherosclerosis or
coronary artery disease, which can increase the risk of heart attack.

What happens during a Coronary Calcium Score?

During a Coronary Calcium Score test, you will lie on a table that slides into a CT scanner. The scanner takes detailed images of your heart to detect and quantify the calcium deposits in your coronary arteries. The procedure is non-invasive, quick, and painless, typically lasting only a few minutes.

Why would I need a Coronary Calcium Score?

A Coronary Calcium Score may be necessary if you have the following symptoms:

  • The patient has risk factors for coronary artery disease, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure

  • Individuals with a family history of heart disease, diabetes, or smoking

Who needs a Coronary Calcium Score?

Individuals with intermediate risk factors for heart disease, those with a family history of heart disease, or individuals who need a clearer assessment of their heart health may benefit from a Coronary Calcium Score. It is particularly useful for people without symptoms but with risk factors for coronary artery disease.

What are the risks of a Coronary Calcium Score?

The Coronary Calcium Score test involves minimal risks that include exposure to a small amount of radiation during the CT scan. However, this exposure is generally low and considered safe for most individuals. There is no need for contrast dye, so the risk of allergic reactions is eliminated.

It's important to note that these risks are rare and the benefits of the test typically outweigh the risks. Additionally, the test is performed under the supervision of trained medical professionals who are equipped to handle any complications that may arise. Your doctor will review your medical history and assess your overall health to determine whether the benefits of the test outweigh the risks for you. If you have concerns about the risks of a stress echocardiogram, discuss them with your doctor before the test.

How do I prepare for a Coronary Calcium Score?

To prepare for a Coronary Calcium Score:

  •  Wear comfortable clothing and avoid consuming caffeine or smoking for a few hours before the test

  • There are usually no dietary restrictions or need for fasting

  • Inform your healthcare provider of any medications you are taking, but you will typically be able to continue your regular medications as usual.
