Exercise Treadmill ECG Test (TMX)

Phillips Stress Testing

What is an Exercise Treadmill ECG Test (TMX)?

An Exercise Treadmill ECG Test (TMX), also known as a stress test, is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the heart's response to physical stress. It involves walking or running on a treadmill while your heart's electrical activity is monitored to detect any abnormalities that may not be visible when the heart is resting.

What happens during an Exercise Treadmill ECG Test (TMX)?

During an Exercise Treadmill ECG Test, electrodes will be attached to your chest to record your heart's electrical activity. You will then walk or run on a treadmill, gradually increasing the intensity of exercise. Your heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG are continuously monitored. The test continues until you reach a target heart rate, experience symptoms, or your doctor decides to stop the test.

Why would I need an Exercise Treadmill ECG Test (TMX)?

You might need an Exercise Treadmill ECG Test if you have symptoms of heart disease, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or unexplained fatigue. It helps diagnose coronary artery disease, evaluate the effectiveness of cardiac treatments, and determine your exercise capacity.

Who needs an Exercise Treadmill ECG Test (TMX)?

An exercise treadmill ECG test may be necessary if you have the following symptoms:

  • Patients with suspected coronary artery disease

  • Those experiencing symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath during exercise

  • Individuals with an abnormal resting ECG

  • Those needing to assess the effectiveness of heart treatments

What are the risks of an Exercise Treadmill ECG Test (TMX)?

Exercise Treadmill ECG is generally safe but involves some risks, particularly for individuals
with severe heart conditions including:

  • These risks include chest pain, irregular heart rhythms, or, rarely, a heart attack

  • Tests are conducted under medical supervision to manage any potential complications promptly

It's important to note that these risks are rare and the benefits of the test typically outweigh the risks. Additionally, the test is performed under the supervision of trained medical professionals who are equipped to handle any complications that may arise. Your doctor will review your medical history and assess your overall health to determine whether the benefits of the test outweigh the risks for you. If you have concerns about the risks of a stress echocardiogram, discuss them with your doctor before the test.

How do I prepare for an Exercise Treadmill ECG Test (TMX)?

To prepare for an Exercise Treadmill ECG Test:

  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for exercise

  • Avoid eating, smoking, or drinking caffeinated beverages for at least three hours before the test

  • Follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider, such as temporarily discontinuing certain medications.
