Ambulatory ECG Monitoring (Holter)

What is an Ambulatory ECG Monitoring?

Ambulatory ECG monitoring is a diagnostic test that records the electrical activity of your heart over an extended period, anywhere from 1 to 14 days using a portable device. It helps detect irregular heart rhythms that may not appear during a standard ECG in a doctor's office.

What happens during an Ambulatory ECG Monitoring?

During ambulatory ECG monitoring, small electrodes are attached to your chest, connected to a portable recording device you carry with you. You go about your daily activities while the device continuously records your heart's electrical activity. After the monitoring period, you return the device to your healthcare provider for analysis.

Why would I need an Ambulatory ECG Monitor?

You might need an ambulatory ECG monitor if you experience symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, fainting, or unexplained chest pain. It can also help diagnose conditions like arrhythmias, evaluate the effectiveness of heart medications, or assess your heart's response to physical activity.

Who needs an Ambulatory ECG Monitor?

An ambulatory ECG monitor may be necessary if you have the following symptoms:

  • When irregular heart rhythms are present

  • Those being evaluated for the effectiveness of their heart medication

  • Individuals experiencing unexplained episodes of fainting or dizziness

What are the risks of an Ambulatory ECG Monitoring?

Ambulatory ECG monitoring is a safe, non-invasive procedure with minimal risks. Some patients may experience minor skin irritation where the electrodes are attached.

It's important to note that these risks are rare and the benefits of the test typically outweigh the risks. Additionally, the test is performed under the supervision of trained medical professionals who are equipped to handle any complications that may arise. Your doctor will review your medical history and assess your overall health to determine whether the benefits of the test outweigh the risks for you. If you have concerns about the risks of a stress echocardiogram, be sure to discuss them with your doctor before the test.

How do I prepare for an Ambulatory ECG Monitoring?

To prepare for ambulatory ECG monitoring:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing to accommodate the device.

  • Avoid applying lotions or oils to your chest area, as they can interfere with electrode adhesion.

  • Your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions based on your individual needs.
